Nine Facts About JJ Wilson

JJ has taught in Egypt, Lesotho, Colombia, England, Italy and the USA, and has trained teachers in 30 different countries.

He is the writer-in-residence at Western New Mexico University, where he teaches ESL (English as a Second Language) Methods, Linguistics, Publication and Creative Writing.

He has co-authored Language to Go, Total English and Speakout, which won the Duke of Edinburgh Speaking Union prize for the Best Book of 2011 in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

JJ has also authored three books on developing listening skills: Active Listening and Research and Resources in Language Teaching: Listening together with Michael Rost, and How to Teach Listening, which won the Speaking Union prize for the Best Book for Teachers in 2008.

JJ also writes fiction. His debut novel, Damnificados, has won the Independent Publishers Book Award and was named by the Oprah Winfrey magazine as one of its top ten books to read. He has also published plays, short stories and is a member of the Academy of American Poets.

JJ was born in Germany, the son of a Nigerian mother and English father, and grew up in the UK. He graduated from Edinburgh University with a joint MA in the History of Art and English Literature.

A man of many talents, JJ was also a junior rugby international and now coaches football.

JJ started teaching because “I wanted to travel… and I loved language”. To date, he has travelled to more than 60 countries and owns “about ten zillion books, half of which I haven’t read”.

After Ukraine, JJ will be presenting in Zurich, Milan, Florence and Rome. Last year, he presented at IATEFL in the UK and did book tours in Spain, Argentina, Algeria, Brazil and Australia.
