All the words you need
There’s the vocabulary syllabus in the book. Then there are the words and expressions that tend to come up in lessons unexpectedly – vocabulary that is hastily scribbled on the board and then wiped off at the end of the lesson. Without systematic recording and recycling neither forms of input are likely to become intake. This session will demonstrate how FOCUS equips students and teachers with a wide variety of classroom ideas on how to record vocabulary effectively and what to do with it once recorded.
Bringing the real dance…. oops, sorry, the real English, into the classroom
Whether your students are interested in dance, film or producing radio programmes, what they need to be able to develop their future careers internationally is authentic functional English in their area of interest and expertise. But “functional English” doesn’t sound very exciting to students, even if we’re aiming at authentic language. They tend to associate language functions with boring exercises. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel: studies show clearly that using video in the classroom has a very positive effect on students’ skills and language development. And video sounds sooo much better than “function”, doesn’t it.
In this practical seminar we will explore ways in which we can use the winning combination of authentic videos and functional language in motivating, interesting contexts. We will also look at ideas for using available materials to their full potential in getting students to USE the language rather than just learn about it.
