Job applications in 2030: do our students have the right skills?
Mike Mayor (Great Britain)
Today’s young people are surrounded by digital technologies: the internet, social media, mobile devices. Generation Z is tech-savvy – but what impact is this having on the skills they need to acquire for the future? And how can the educators of today prepare the global citizens of tomorrow? This presentation will look at the findings of a report carried out by Pearson into the Future of Skills: Employment in 2030. Whilst few would deny that English is often a “passport” to a better education, a better job, or a promotion, the presenter will draw on research that suggests learning English is much more powerful than simply the acquisition of a second language. The process of learning a language trains the brain to think in certain ways – ways which are of value to future employers. The presenter will argue that language teachers are uniquely positioned to build the type of skills that are identified in the 2030 report by focussing on a set of 21st century skills: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and creativity.

What Skills Do (Business) English Teachers Really Need?
Evan Frendo (Germany)
We all know that a lot is happening in the world of language teaching. Products like Google Pixel buds are offering solid proof that the world of AI is not far away, offering our clients very new options in their day to day communication needs. The marketplace is also changing, with access to online language learning resources really challenging traditional models of delivery of language training. Likewise research into how people communicate in the international workplace, particularly in areas like English as a lingua franca and corpus linguistics, are questioning a lot of what we have been taking for granted. In this session I will review some of the key changes, and, perhaps more importantly, discuss the skills teachers might need to succeed in this brave new world.
